An American Family

George David

Deceased

October 10, 1893 - August 24, 1978

My father was an Assyrian born in Persia (Iran) and received his U.S. citizenship by volunteering to serve in the US Army during WWI. He was stationed in France and Germany. When he was discharged from the Army he returned to Chicago, Illinois/Gary, Indiana. He died at the age of 86.

The most touching story of my father took place on Thanksgiving Day ~ 1946. All three sons had returned home after WWII. It was the first time the family had been together in five years. When my father attempted to say grace he was too overcome with emotion to speak. There were only tears.

Suria David Deceased

The 3 star flag was proudly displayed in our window showing that there were three David brothers serving during WWII

My mother was also an Assyrian born in Persia and lived 86 years but lived thirteen years after her husband's death as my father was thirteen years older than my mother. Her greatest joy was cooking delicious Assyrian dishes for her family.

Arthur David

My brother Arthur served in the US Army during WWII.

My oldest brother Arthur lived to the age of 65. He was a kind hearted man and gave an allowance to every one of his brothers and his sister when we were growing up. He was in the Civilian Conservation Core as a teenager. He made $30.00 a month. He was allowed to keep $8.00 a month and the remaining $22.00 was sent home to help his family through the depression. Shortly after leaving the CCC he served in the Army and was stationed overseas.
